Curriculum

The program is designed to provide students with a curriculum that allows them to learn subjects ranging from basic to specialized in a systematized, step by step process so that they will acquire a wide range of knowledge in the fields of chemistry and biology.
In the first year, students study common education subjects and basic chemistry subjects. In the second year, specialized chemistry and biology lectures begin. In the third year, more specialized lectures are started to prepare students for their graduation research. Also in the second and third years, experiments and exercises are added so that students can acquire the ability to think and solve problems on their own. In the fourth year, students conduct graduation research, develop advanced expertise and skills, and acquire basic skills as engineers and researchers. Many students go on to the graduate school and hone their professional skills.

Lecture Overview

The Chemistry and Biotechnology Program offers many lecture subjects so that students will acquire a wide range of knowledge in the fields of chemistry and biology. Lectures offered in each year are as follows.

First year, second year (Learn the basic knowledge)

In the first year, students learn basic chemistry before they progress on to gaining advanced expertise. They also acquire the basic knowledge required of the students of Kagoshima University in mathematics, physics, foreign languages, humanities, social studies.
Main lecture subjects: Organic Chemistry Basics, Physical Chemistry Basics, Calculus, Physics Basics

In the second year, lectures on specialized organic chemistry, physical chemistry and biological chemistry begin. These lectures are given by faculty members, and students can acquire a wide range of specialized knowledge. It is also in the second year that experimental subjects forming the basis of graduation research begin.
Main lecture subjects: Organic Chemistry I, II, III; Physical Chemistry I, II; Polymer Chemistry; Biomolecular Chemistry; and Chemical and Bioengineering Experiments

Third year (Learn the specialized knowledge in chemistry)

More specialized lectures begin to prepare students for graduation research. Students also learn more specialized knowledge through experimental subjects. Students are assigned to laboratories at the end of the first semester of the third year, and exercise problem based subjects begin to prepare students for graduation research.
Main lecture subjects: Organic Industrial Chemistry, Environmental Chemical Engineering, Interfacial Science, Practice in Chemical Information Analysis, Biomolecular Measurement, Molecular Biology, Introduction to Medical Engineering, Microbiology

Fourth year (Graduation research)

Students conduct graduation research in the laboratories they belong to, develop advanced expertise and skills, and acquire the basic skills necessary to pursue careers as engineers or researchers. Many students go on to the graduate school and hone their professional skills.
